Eating Disorder Awareness Week EDAW shines a light on Avoidant Restrictive Food Intake Disorder (ARFID).
From 26 February – 3 March Eating Disorder Awareness Week (EDAW) will be focusing on ARFID, a type of eating distress /disorder.
ARFID is a relatively new term. If you have ARFID, you’ll strongly feel the need to avoid certain foods (or all foods).
ARFID does not tend to be linked to weight or body image issues. It’s more anxiety about the process of eating itself. It can result in not getting the nutrition and energy which you need to stay healthy. In children, it can affect healthy growth and development. It can also affect social relationships because food avoidance makes it hard to eat with other people.
At Eating Distress North East we can work with you if you have ARFID – or any other type of eating distress – and you can register for our services here.
If you have a family member or friend with ARFID and you’d like to understand how best to support them you can sign up for our Family & Friends course Holding onto Hope.
